WHILE LAWYERS GRUMBLE, STATE COURT PRAISED FOR BACKLOG FOCUS

While lawyers here have continuing misgiving about "best practices," New Jersey has been singled out for praise for beating back its backlogs. An article in "Future Trends in State Courts - 2007," published by the National Center for State Courts, applauds the persistence of New Jersey's court system to follow through on the drive begun in 1999 by then-Chief Justice Deborah T. Poritz. "In this age of chronically short attention spans, when the press and politicians, as well as technology entrepreneurs, are continually looking for the 'next great idea,' it is refreshing to see a counter-example in which a state's judicial leadership has demonstrated the tenacity to remain focused on one key performance indicator," wrote the study's author, John M. Greacen. Focusing exclusively on data, Greacen didn't discuss the objections of lawyers who say the deadlines that have led to more-favorable backlog statistics have come at the expense of complete justice for their clients. Greacen also said New Jersey's "centralized administrative structure" is another feature other states should emulate.
